The Karen hilltribe people are made up of certain tribal sub groups like the Sgaw and Pwo, and the Karen are also comprised of many religious groups such as those that practice traditional animism, Catholicism, Buddhism and other Christian denominations.

The Karen often celebrate together, and communal celebrations are part of their culture. For example, the Catholic celebrations involve every village coming together from the locality and celebrating in unison.

On Christmas morning, there is a lively atmosphere within the Karen community. Everyone who joins the celebration will wear traditional Karen clothing. The colourful handwoven fabrics make the event bright and clearly show the community’s cultural identity. Throughout the day, people work together to prepare food and take part in activities, creating an atmosphere full of cooperation and warm smiles.

In the evening, everyone will usually gather to share a meal together. After that, a Mass is held, and the atmosphere moves to more calm and sacred. This is then followed by performances about the birth of Jesus, with each village from the locality taking turns to perform. These performances create a strong sense of unity and are a way for every village to be part of a large gathering and reduce feelings of isolation. Sometimes there is a lucky draw activity, which adds fun and laughter to the celebration.

Christmas Day is not only an important religious day for the Karen people, but also a special time for the community to come together, spend time with one another, and preserve their culture through traditional dress, performances, and shared activities throughout the day.

For all those celebrating, we wish you have a very happy Christmas and a time of love and reflection with your friends, family and community!
